Who is GAFM?
The Georgia Association of Floodplain Management (GAFM) is a professional organization dedicated to promoting sound floodplain management policies and flood damage prevention in order to protect human life and health. Our members represent various professions, including but not limited to local, state, and federal government officials, building officials, emergency managers, engineers, floodplain managers, GIS technicians, planning officials, and stormwater professions. Each year in the spring, GAFM sponsors an annual technical conference where presentations focus on projects and policies for improved floodplain management and flood hazard reduction. GAFM also sponsors training courses on various flood-related subjects throughout the year. GAFM is a Chapter Member of the Association of State Floodplain Mangers, Inc. (ASFPM). By educating Georgia citizens and elected officials on flooding and flood hazard reduction, GAFM with support from ASFPM works to reduce flood losses in Georgia.
GAFM Purpose
Georgia Association of Floodplain Management serves as a unifying force for floodplain managers within the State of Georgia, producing a support mechanism, which is ultimately aimed at branching into the nationwide network. GAFM seeks to find and make possibilities for the presence, thoughts and actions of its members to affect and integrate within public policy the best-known management practices expressing collective intent and experience, thereby initiating within the general populace the recognition towards, and resonance with, sound floodplain and stormwater management as an imperative duty of environmental stewardship, described by the actions, examples and contributions of its members. The Association will provide educational opportunities allowing dissemination of general and technical information, in order to keep its members abreast with the advancement of floodplain and stormwater management knowledge. The Association encourages the exchange of information, ideas and experiences among the practitioners of floodplain and stormwater management.
Regional Map
GAFM has divided the state of Georgia into six different regions. These regions are intended to create local connections between GAFM members and foster relationships between them. Our Regional Representatives serve as ambassadors for their regions, coordinating local GAFM events such as volunteer opportunities and happy hours.
